These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level domains remained active.
